Simple, a little over one hundred years ago, Maria Montessori created her teaching method through observation and practice. What she discovered about how the brain develops, about the different periods of growth and maturity have only recently be proven correct by scientist who have studied the brain. Her intuitive reasoning and dedication to the early and then later periods of a child’s life was and still is being validated now that modern medicine and science has caught up. Dr. Montessori called the early years of the child the ‘absorbent mind’ period. The child’s brain is like a sponge just soaking up all the stimuli it comes into contact with. 70%-80% of our personality, learning traits and processing faculties are formed during that ‘absorbent mind’ period which begins at birth to about 6or 7 years old. It is also during this period that possible developmental problems can easily be remedied before becoming ingrained and a lifelong difficulty.
