Everybody wants to get a massage but not everybody is okay giving them to somebody. The possibility of hurting another person is a very real concern. We are terrified that we may not help enough. We get afraid that others will dislike what we are trying to do. You will be happy to find out that anybody can learn how to give a great massage every time they want to do just that. Here is how you can give a great back massage whenever you would like to.
It is crucial that the person be comfortable while lying down. The surface on which they are on should be firm but soft. You don’t have to have a table but try making them lie down on the bed. If the person is lying on the floor, provide them with some soft towels or blankets to lay down…or even invest in a comfortable mat. If the massage-ee prefers to keep his or her shirt on, see to it that the shirt is made of a softer material to prevent accidental scratches and friction build up.
Start with a couple of standard rubbing. Gradually, and using the full flat side of both of your hands, rub up from the base of the back and toward the neck. This rub needs to have at least a little bit of pressure in it but don’t apply your full massage pressure yet. Start at the base of the back and glide your hands upwards, along either side of the spinal column toward the neck then across the shoulders and back down the back. As you keep doing this, try to make every “loop” of the back smaller so that you can be sure to get to all areas of the back.
You can generate good and pointted pressure when you use the heels of your hands. Move the heels of your palms in small circles starting in the middle of the base of the back and then working out toward the sides, upwards and then back toward the backbone until you’ve done this to the whole back.
Try sitting at the side of whoever is obtaining the massage. Next, place one hand on top of the other and thrust into the back with only your fingers. Start at the backbone and dig in steadily and with solid pressure across the back away from the spine and then lightly sort of move your hands back across the back toward the spine and move up. Do this again while working your way up the back and then do this on the other side.
Massage the backbone. Start at the base of the person’s spine and then work up all of the sausage like muscles on each side of the spine with two of your fingers or your thumbs. Rub each tiny node at least five times to generate some friction before moving on to the next. Massage one side of the back and then work on the other side.
One of the things to keep in mind as you work through each of these techniques is that it is a good idea to re-relax your person between each portion of the massage you’re giving. This means that after you’ve used one technique, go back to the basic rub that you used at the beginning of the massage for a couple of minutes.
