Acetabulum, Femoral Head, Total Hip Arthroplasty, Conventional Hip Arthroplasty/Replacement, Large-Head Hip Arthroplasty/Replacement, Hip Resurfacing, Hip Hemi-resurfacing New words and what they mean Acetabulum = hip socket – resides in the pelvis Femoral Head = the ball of the hip – resides at the top of the femur bone Total Hip Arthroplasty – a.k.a Total Hip Replacement – Any procedure by which the hip joint is resurfaced or replaced by an artificial bearing surface Conventional Hip Arthroplasty/Replacement – Resurface the acetabulum with a new socket, and then snap into the socket a plastic, ceramic, or metal insert as the bearing surface – Then cut the ball of the femur off and put a stem down the inside of the bone – Then put a ball on top of this – usually metal, sometimes ceramic Large-Head Hip Arthroplasty/Replacement – Like a conventional hip replacement but the new socket does not have an insert – it’s a one-piece metal bearing surface (like the ASR acetabular component) – these are what the lawsuit is about in the U.S. – And so that allows |
