Characteristics of Nigerian Art

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Art is an amazing way to get to know a previously unknown culture. It often reflects cultural diversity as well as religious and ethnic origin. There are many unique societies throughout the globe and art is a way to bring them all a little closer to home. Nigerian art is certainly an excellent method to learn more about that ancient and fascinating region. Like many forms of traditional African art, Nigerian art reflects that society’s need for beautiful as well functional pieces. Many of the art forms created today in Nigeria have their roots firmly planted in the traditions and methods of their forbearers. The Nigerian people are proud of their art and artists and it shows in their dedication to the visual, audio, and performed art forms.

Is modern art/abstracts framed of just hanged on its canvas without a frame?

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

I’m doing a modern/abstract painting as a gift for a friend, but I have seen some modern art just hanging by their canvas and not framed. Is either way acceptable?

Artist’s prerogative, you decide..

Live Nude Exhibit: Museum of Modern Art

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

A new exhibit at The Museum of Modern Art is causing discomfort among some visitors by bringing them close to nude performers — some might say too close.

Two nude performers stand inches apart in a narrow doorway of the exhibit of work by Yugoslavian-born artist Marina Abramovic, which opened on Sunday.

The position of the naked pair, who alternate and are either opposite or same-sex performers, forces patrons to decide whether to walk between them.

Masters of Photography Diane Arbus Part 2

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

In 1967, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York City presented New Documents — a major exhibition of the personal visions of several photographers — the surprise of the show was the work of Diane Arbus. On her own, against the advice of many friends, she had pursued her documentation of people on the fringes of society, and the astonishing in the commonplace. Suddenly she was famous, with students and imitators. By 1972 her work was everywhere, and was featured at the Venice Biennale, where it became, as New York Times critic Hilton Kramer said, the overwhelming sensation of the American Pavilion. But by then Diane Arbus was dead, by her own hand. “Nothing about her life, her photographs or her death was accidental or ordinary,” wrote Richard Avedon. “They were mysterious and decisive and unimaginable except to her. Which is the way it is with genius.”

This half-hour documentary was made that same year. It explores her work and ideas, often in her own words as spoken by a close friend. It includes reflections by some of the people who knew her best; daughter Doon, teacher Lisette Model, colleague Marvin Israel, and John Szarkowski, at that time the director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art.

Current Paint Color Trends

Interior: The most common paint color is white; white is a good choice for many, as it goes well with anybody’s style. It has a tendency to make a room look larger than it is, so white is especially good for smaller rooms. The second most popular color would have to be light brown, like a light latte color. This is best for larger rooms, as it doesn’t make it look bigger like white does; it also brings a nice warm feel to the space. The last color, is one which has become very popular but is normally used as an accent wall, if you haven’t guessed it already, the color is red. You will sometimes find red in kitchens and bathrooms too, only they usually have more of a Cranberry tinge to them.

Goldsmiths: This is Modern Art (TRAILER)

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Goldsmiths has produced six Turner prize winners in its illustrious history, notably Damien Hirst. But what lies behind the famous institution’s unrivalled reputation for producing the artistic stars of the future?

This new two-part documentary follows a group of Goldsmiths artists as they struggle to create art and make a name for themselves during the run-up to their final masters’ show, a showcase at which dealers and collectors jostle to sign the latest sensation.

These programmes follow the artists in the vital months following graduation as they take their first steps into professional careers, exploring the culture of contemporary art through the ambitions, influences and attitudes of the next generation of young British artists.

All are desperate to create the kind of work that will propel them to centre stage in the art world, but only a select few will succeed.

Factors Behind Modern Housing-Making Plans For a Modern Home

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Like everything else, house plans have also evolved with the times. Gone are the days when building construction plans included labyrinthine corridors, domes, and arches and carved pillars. When thick walls were the necessary support to erect anything beyond the ground floor and filigree work over the verandah was considered indispensable.
