Realism was the movement which directly preceded Impressionism. It began in the 1860s in France, arguably with Gustave Courbet, who tried to reveal the harsh reality of "un-bourguois" culture by painting seemingly mundane everyday rural scenes on an epic scale similar to that of history painting.

Modern style is our picture called Stand. A print of seven tall skinny trees with the sun shining down on them. This could be a modern statement.
